Lowell, MA Duck Island WWTF Phase III Upgrade

The City of Lowell’s Duck Island Wastewater Treatment Facility (WWTF) upgrade involves significant improvements to process systems, civil structures, and chemical handling. Major tasks include replacing grit removal and conveyance equipment, gravity thickener mechanisms, and sludge pumping systems. A new centrifuge dewatering system will replace the existing belt filter press, alongside related control room installations and conveyor modifications. Polymer transfer systems and optional polymer storage upgrades are also planned.

Civil work includes site preparations for new buildings, installation of slide gates, and improvements to sludge and scum handling systems. Key enhancements include aeration system upgrades with new diffusers, mixer modifications, and chemical phosphorus removal with bulk storage tanks and feed systems. Chlorination and dechlorination systems will be updated with additional storage tanks, pumps, and piping, along with sodium chlorite feed system upgrades.
